SPJ president hosts a virtual “town hall” this Saturday

Want your voice to be heard? If you would like to become more involved with the Society of Professional Journalists, or simply hang out in our “town hall,” join SPJ President John Ensslin for a virtual town hall at 11 this Saturday morning. You can participate in the meeting by phone or online via GoToMeeting. For an email link to the platform, please email John. The platform can accommodate 25 members, and seats are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. This town hall is for SPJ members in Region 1. Not certain which region you are in? Access America: Strategies for getting public records (July 19)

Feeling at a loss when it comes to Freedom of Information requests? Then make sure to attend this special session on strategies for acquiring public records by Society of Professional Journalists Freedom of Information Trainer Michael Morisy, the co-founder of MuckRock.com, a tool that allows anyone to submit a FOIA request without licking a stamp. The Deadline Club will be hosting this workshop at the New York Newspaper Guild. Light refreshments will be served. FREE for Deadline Club members, and $10 for non-members. Non-members can pay by credit card HERE. Although members attend free, you should reserve your spot HERE.

SPJ National Convention in the Sunshine State

Reserve your spot for SPJ’s Excellence in Journalism 2012 national convention and conference in sunny Fort Lauderdale, Fla. from September 20 to 22. Dozens of programswill be offered this year. It is an excellent opportunity for networking, learning and relaxing with your peers from around the country. SPJ members attend the event at a reduced rate.

Benefits of Deadline Club Membership

The Deadline Club is the New York City Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. The club typically hosts one or two events a month, including intensive workshops on topics ranging from freedom of information laws to social media, insightful panels, newsroom tours and media mixers. It’s a great way to make new professional contacts. Members have many opportunities to socialize with their peers working in print, broadcast and digital media in New York City. Although the Annual Awards Dinner is open to all, members may attend on discounted tickets.
